SADC RPTC - Vision for the Future: Final Report of an Independent Study Commissioned by the Directorate of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation, 2 May 2008

Background to the Report

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) Regional Peacekeeping Training Centre (RPTC) was established in 1995 as a regional institution for peacekeeping training. Its role and responsibilities changed in 2005 following the transfer of ownership of the Centre from the Government of Zimbabwe to SADC.

In view of these developments, the Director of the Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation (OPDS), pursuant to a decision by the Ministerial Committee of the Organ (MCO), commissioned a forward-looking study to examine how best the RPTC can meet its objectives and contribute to the broader security agenda of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation.

The team convened from November 2007 to March 2008 to examine these issues and generate recommendations as to how the RPTC can best fulfil its role as a regional Centre of Excellence.
